I've been lusting after an Ombre Tee for quite some time now. I had my eye on this one from ASOS, but as I wanted it super over sized, I wanted to get the M/L.Aside from the tee being a whopping £40 (!!!), M/L was always out of stock and so I had left the tee in my saved items for agges. When all sizes went out of stock I checked out Zara for similar tops, but there was never any ones that had such a nice fade from white to blue. Then I saw this tutorial from 'A pair and a spare' and it looked quite easy to follow. So I adventured into a bit of DIY and to be honest, I love the result. In fact, I'm sitting in Starbucks in my Darling DIY creation right now...
Step 1: Buy a pack of handwash dye, and some salt. You can use household salt which may be cheaper, but as it was 65p, I indulged in the brand salt. haha. The dye itself was about £3.50, but I'm sure Ive seen it cheaper than that in some places. I used about half the amount of salt (250 g) per packet dye, but obviously, follow the packet instructions.
Buy a plain tee. This one was from George at Asda for £4 in the mens section. I got it super over sized. I also like that it was label-less, no sewn in tags. Perfect for my own creation.
Hang it on a wooden hanger to help to top lie straight in the dye.
Fill a bucket full of hot water and pour in the salt
Divide the dye into 4. This picture looks super dodgy, but I had to separate the dye into 4 parts to create a pastel effect, (to create a gradient.) I used sandwich bags to divide the dye into 4 parts. I mixed one of the bags in with the hot water and salt mix. Then I dipped the tee in, stopping at the highest point where I wanted the dye to be. Then I mixed in another bag of die, and dipped it slightly lower. Then added another bag, dipping the top slightly lower again, and then I put the final bag into the mix, and dipped in only the very end of the tee. (This is much better explained in the 'a pair and a spare' tutorial!!
I then rinsed the dye out of the bottom of the tee and left it to dry over night. It looked like this:
I then threw it in the washer and let it dry and this is how it turned out..
I do like how it turned out, these photos don't really show how ombre the actual top is. It totally fades more in real life, I promise!! I rolled the sleeves up and cut the neckline a bit to give it more of a girly feel to it. Perfect for a casual day!
Buh-Bye xox
